If you have seen all the exciting Coyote Mustang drag racing, but felt like your street-going ’Stang didn’t have a place there, BMR Suspension, Revolution Automotive, and VMP Tuning have put together the event just for you, and it’s sponsored by your favorite Ford performance site—SVTPerformance.com!

Have a street Coyote with a quick naturally aspirated or power-adder combo? If so, the SVTPerformance.com Street Coyote Shootout is for you.

The most important thing you need to know is that this race will take place on Saturday November 29 at Orlando Speed World outside of Orlando, Florida. Naturally, we will be there to cover the event, so you’ll see a post event wrap-up story right here, but it was VMP Tuning’s main man, Justin Starkey, that you have to thank for organizing this showcase of modern 5.0-liter speed.

“When we put Rebecca’s Roush Supercharged 2011 GT together back in 2010-2011 we got a lot of positive feedback from customers. We successfully campaigned it into the 10s and eventually the high 9s. We had many people come up to us with a desire to build similar cars for themselves,” Justin Starkey of VMP Tuning said of his wife’s quick Coyote.

We hope to see a great mix of street-going S197 and S550 5.0-liter Mustangs running at the event, as well as some quick EcoBoost four-bangers.

There is no doubt that the scalability of the street Coyote speed led to a proliferation of the mega-powered street cars without a true heads-up showcase. With the emergence of the 2015 Mustang and its new powertrain options, Justin believed the time was right to put something together.

“Four years later, there is still no class or racing organization that truly supports the Coyote street car. Adam at Revolution Automotive did the first shootouts, and there have been a few since. We’re looking to develop consistent events that occur several times per year,” Justin explained. “Professional racing organizations are aimed at purpose-built cars that require huge budgets. VMP has always been about performance for your dollar, I don’t want to do something that my customers can’t re-create.”

Does this concept sound like something that fits your car’s profile or maybe the style of a friend’s car? If so, you should really appreciate the simple structure of the event. It is open to all 2011 and newer S197 and S550 Mustangs with 5.0-liter engines, and there is even a specialty class for the new EcoBoost 2.3-liter Mustangs. It goes without saying that participating Mustangs must be street cars with valid tags and registration. The cars may run the factory manual or automatic transmissions or the Tremec Magnum six-speed manual. They must have interiors, and the must meet the following minimum weights:

  • Street Coyote Power Adder: Mustangs running a supercharger or turbo must weigh at least 3,500 pounds. If your Mustang runs nitrous only, it must weight at least 3,400 pounds. Finally, Coyotes running either a supercharger or turbocharger and a single stage of nitrous must weigh 3,700 pounds.
  • Street Coyote Naturally Aspirated: Naturally aspirated Coyotes must weight at least 3,300 pounds.
  • Street EcoBoost Mustang: EcoBoost Mustangs must weigh at least 3,300 pounds.

And, for those of you with Coyotes that haul cargo, there is a class for 2011-and-up 5.0 F-150s, sponsored by More Power Tuning:

• Street Coyote Truck: Coyote-powered F-150s must weigh at least 4,700 pounds.

The rules are pretty straightforward rules, right? So, it should be a fun day at the track. However, to sweeten the pot, a variety of aftermarket companies are pitching in prizes for various categories, including class winners and specialty awards, such as Farthest Traveled, Fastest Stick, Fastest Auto, and Top Qualifier. So far, those companies include:

• BMR Suspension (TBD)

• HP Tuners (Ford Pro HPT cable)

• JMS Chip & Performance (TBD)

• More Power Tuning (TBD)

• Piedmont Custom Motorsports ($500 off Coyote engine build with reinforced block)

• Power by the Hour (TBD)

• Revolution Automotive (MT82 build-up)

• SCT Performance (Two X4 PowerFlash handheld tuners)

• VMP Tuning (Cash prizes)

If the prizes don’t get you excited, there’s a thrilling culmination to the race. A new rivalry will be born. The quickest S197 and S550 5.0 Mustangs—Naturally Aspirated and Power Adder—will square off at the end of the event to see which chassis reigns supreme.

The inspiration for this event is quick Coyote street cars, like Rebecca Starkey’s VMP Gen2 TVS-boosted 2011 Mustang GT. It’s a low-9-second ride that’s right at home on the street.

“This will be the first event you’ll see S550s start running at en masse. The new car has a similar engine, but the chassis is going to leave a lot to figure out,” Justin added. “We would like to follow this event up with several more next year at Orlando Speed World and Maryland International Raceway. We are already looking at planning an early March event in Florida.”

Stay tuned to this page as this event comes together. It should be a fun race, and we’ll bring you all the details. If you have questions or are interested in sponsoring a prize, email [email protected].
