Mustang Week heads to the speedway for autocross runs and track laps
By Steve Turner
The variety of events that make up Mustang Week are what take this event to a different level. Where else can you spend the morning at the beach, and then head to the racetrack from some shenanigans? After the casual kick-off at the Palace Theater, the Mustang Week festivities moved to the Myrtle Beach Speedway for autocross runs and fun run laps around the speedway oval.
At the Meet ’N Greet we got the idea that this year’s event had grown, but the events at the speedway confirmed this. The lines for both the autocross and speedway fun runs looped around half of the track, and the wait for some lasted hours. These events are so popular they could easily take place over two days.
While people lapped the oval track and slid around cones, there was a formidable manufacturer’s midway in the center of the oval. It was there that we first saw Caleb Cook enjoying his Make A Wish visit to Mustang Week. He was zipping around the midway in his Power Wheels. He was having a great time. You can learn more about Caleb’s experience here…
Later in the day Caleb was able to ride in Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s RTR-X and his prototype 2015 Mustang RTR comp car. Vaughn’s driving prowess is always impressive, and he did not disappoint this year. Seeing both of his Mustangs slide around the oval on the edge of traction but in complete control was a treat. You can see some of the slideways action in Bullitt Auto Detail’s Mustang Week drone video recap here…
Of course, Vaughn’s tire-slaying prowess set the tone for the ever-popular SVTPerformance.com Burnout Contest. Yes, your favorite site was back with the event that brings out an amazing display of smoking tires, popped motors, and amateur drifting. This year’s event was so great we are dedicating a separate story to it, so stop back by tomorrow for complete coverage of the contest.
eek!!! Great write up and pics Steve! Can’t wait for the Burnout Competition article.
