Keeping Track

Mustang Week heads to the speedway for autocross runs and track laps

By Steve Turner

The variety of events that make up Mustang Week are what take this event to a different level. Where else can you spend the morning at the beach, and then head to the racetrack from some shenanigans? After the casual kick-off at the Palace Theater, the Mustang Week festivities moved to the Myrtle Beach Speedway for autocross runs and fun run laps around the speedway oval.

If you are a Mustang fan, Mustang Week is a dream come true. You can stand in one spot and see an endless parade of Mustangs, from the older models you haven’t seen in years to the latest Mustangs off the lot. Really, where else are you going to see a 50 Years Limited Edition 2015 Mustang lapping a speedway oval?

Really, where else are you going to see a 50 Years Limited Edition 2015 Mustang lapping a speedway oval?

At the Meet ’N Greet we got the idea that this year’s event had grown, but the events at the speedway confirmed this. The lines for both the autocross and speedway fun runs looped around half of the track, and the wait for some lasted hours. These events are so popular they could easily take place over two days.

While people lapped the oval track and slid around cones, there was a formidable manufacturer’s midway in the center of the oval. It was there that we first saw Caleb Cook enjoying his Make A Wish visit to Mustang Week. He was zipping around the midway in his Power Wheels. He was having a great time. You can learn more about Caleb’s experience here

Later in the day Caleb was able to ride in Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s RTR-X and his prototype 2015 Mustang RTR comp car. Vaughn’s driving prowess is always impressive, and he did not disappoint this year. Seeing both of his Mustangs slide around the oval on the edge of traction but in complete control was a treat. You can see some of the slideways action in Bullitt Auto Detail’s Mustang Week drone video recap here…

Of course, Vaughn’s tire-slaying prowess set the tone for the ever-popular SVTPerformance.com Burnout Contest. Yes, your favorite site was back with the event that brings out an amazing display of smoking tires, popped motors, and amateur drifting. This year’s event was so great we are dedicating a separate story to it, so stop back by tomorrow for complete coverage of the contest.

Fun Runs

Whether it’s a Terminator, Lightning, or GT500 we can’t help but smile every time we hear the whine of a positive-displacement blower as the driver gets into the boost on the oval track. The track puts tires and cones at intervals on the track to keep speeds under control, but there’s still plenty of room to have fun between the obstacles.

Our pal and loyal SVTPer Derrick Massey endured the line to have some fun in his Comp Orange New Edge. While his car is mildly modded at the moment, DMassey has big Coyote swap plans for this car. He just has to decide which auto-trans option is right for him.

Why wait for the new Shelby GT350 when you can rip around the racetrack when you can run your GT350-style Fox coupe around?

Make A Wish

Caleb Cook and his mom, Elizabeth, were interviewed at the Speedway by Myrtle Beach ABC affiliate WPDE about his Make A Wish Mustang Week experience. Caleb definitely received the VIP treatment all week long and he seemed to love every second of it.

Here is Caleb’s Mustang Week Edition Power Wheels. When Caleb wasn’t zipping around the track trying to drift his ride, his ride was displayed proudly right next to the other Mustang Week Editions. Major Kudos to the Mustang Week team for making this boy’s dream come true and to Bullitt Auto Detail for restyling his awesome Power Wheels Mustang.

We witnessed an adorable moment when Caleb got out of Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s RTR-X after sliding around the track. The young Mustang fan got out of the vintage drifter and went right over to the prototype 2015 Mustang drifter. He pointed to the S550 and said, “This one.” Being the guy he is, Vaughn simply agreed, strapped Caleb in, and took him for another ride.

Autocross

If you bring a Boss 302 to Mustang Week, you owe it to yourself to take it out on the autocross course. We have done it, and it’s a blast.

At the BFGoodrich Autocross Driving School on Tuesday students qualified for a lap-time event that would be contested on during Wednesday’s events at the Speedway. After completing the school in their own cars, the drivers competed in the Are You Driver Enough Mustang Challenge driving 2015 Mustangs wearing BFG Comp-2 A/S tires.

In the end it came down to David Wooldridge and Joel Orsi in the final shootout. David took the win by a slim margin and drove away with an incredible prize from BFG. He didn’t score a trophy, he won a trip to The SEMA Show in a Ford F-150 Raptor!

Vaughn Gittin Jr. Drifting Demo

In what has become a popular tradition, Vaughn Gittin Jr. brought his Ready To Rock rig out to Mustang week to show of his line of Mustang RTRs and give the fans a drifting demonstration. He got slideways in the RTR-X and his prototype 2015 Mustang RTR comp car to the delight of fans at the speedway. And, as we previously mentioned, he was kind enough to give Caleb Cook a couple of rides as well. Loyal SVTP member Mike Lund was even lucky enough to ride in the passenger seat with Vaughn, which is an experience he won’t soon forget.
