Slide into the driver seat of a Shelby GT350, adjust your seat, grab the shifter and put your hands on the wheel. Immediately you know this isn’t just any Mustang. Instead, Ford Performance engineers made sure to improve the little details to make your driving experience even better. One of the best aspects of the new Shelby isn’t the Recaro seats or the nicely designed shift knob. Instead it is the beefy steering wheel.

If you haven’t been in a GT350, you might want to know the improvements offered by its steering wheel. Late Model Restoration put together this handy infographic to demonstrate the differences between the standard and Shelby steering wheels.

Featuring a racing stripe, larger thumb grips and a flat bottom, the Shelby wheel definitely looks the part of a race-inspired piece. However, it is the thick padding and generous dose of Alcantara wrapping that delivers such a great driving feel. It really is one of our favorite parts of the new GT350 that doesn’t involve speed and rpm.

If you are jealous of the hoop in the new Shelby, don’t be. It’s actually a direct replacement for the factory wheel in your 2015-2016 Mustang. Because it’s an easy swap, the team at Late Model Restoration is offering this wheel for sale (PN LRS-3600AC; $329.99). As such, the company put together a simple guide to how the wheel differs from the standard Mustang wheel.

The GT350 wheel is a direct replacement for the stock steering wheel in your S550, but you will need to swap over the bezels, air bag and other hardware to the new wheel.

“We believe this simple swap can improve the interior styling and driver experience drastically,” says LMR. “With all these upgrades over the stock texture leather steering wheel, why not make the switch?”

The installation is a straight remove-and-replace operation and you can download the instructions right here if you want to get a feel for it. While the GT350 wheel is more of a direct swap on a manual-trans car, it can be used on an automatic S550 as long as you swap over the switches, air bag module and hardware from your stock wheel.

“All you need to do is remove your old controls, control bezels, air bag, paddle shifters (auto transmission) and horn,” says the company. “Then swap them over to your new GT350 steering wheel. The hard part of wiring it all up was already done at the assembly plant.”

The wheel is a plug-and-play swap, especially for manual-transmission cars. It will work on automatic Mustangs if you transfer the rear trim panel and paddle-shifting mechanisms to the GT350 wheel.
