Today Ford is revealing the 2017 Super Duty pickup to the public for the first time in—where else?—Texas. After all, everything is bigger in the Lone Star state. If you are looking for a tow rig for you racing program or pristine show car, Ford is promising its super-size workhorse is tougher and lighter than its predecessors.

Today Ford revealed the forthcoming 2017 Super Duty truck, which is up to 350 pounds lighter than its predecessor thanks to a dent-resistant aluminum-alloy body. Because it is lighter and stronger, Ford says the new Super Duty can tow and haul more that the last version.

“Ford Super Duty is the truck America’s hardest-working men and women trust and depend on,” Joe Hinrichs, Ford president, The Americas, said. “We are helping these customers build a better world by delivering a new generation of pickups that set new benchmarks in capability, performance and efficiency.”

Sporting a body hewn from a high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy, the new Super Duty rides on a new, fully boxed frame built from 95 percent high-strength steel It is said to be 24 times stiffer. Depending on the chassis configuration, the new body and frame combine to drop the truck’s weight by up to 350 pounds.

“As we remove weight, we’re making Super Duty more productive by giving our customers better towing and payload capability. We’re backing up improved capability with a stronger gasoline and diesel Super Duty engine lineup,” Craig Schmatz, Super Duty chief engineer, said. “The bottom line is Super Duty customers will be able to tow and haul more than ever before.”

Those choices include a 6.2-liter V-8, a 6.8-liter V-10, and a 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 diesel. Backing the 6.2-liter engine is a new TorqShift-G transmission.

“While Super Duty is America’s best-selling heavy-duty truck, we never take our leadership for granted,” Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development and chief technical officer, said. “Our team is using relentless innovation in materials, technology and Built Ford Tough engineering to deliver customers our best Super Duty yet.”

The Regular, Super, and Crew Cabs are all longer on the 2017 Super Duty. Inside they feature dual-compartment glove boxes, overhead-mounted auxiliary switches. The rear seats fold flat so you can easily load even more gear into the cab.

To push that leadership, Ford is packing the Super Duty with a lot of technology to make your work day better. Familiar to drivers of Ford cars, Super Duty offers Sync 3, Blind Spot Information System, Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning. More specific for the Super Duty’s intended use is an LED lighting system—including side-view spotlights, cargo box lighting, headlights, and taillights—designed to provide light all around the truck.

You can choose from five flavors of Super Duty—XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum—and the trucks will go on sale in late 2016.

Even the Super Duty’s cargo box is packed with features. Not only does the tailgate have this handy step, but also it has a remote lock and release via the key fob. The tailgate is damped so it opens slowly. The bed is equipped with metal brackets and cleats that Ford calls BoxLink. This system allows you to easily install cargo boxes and other accessories.

If you have a Super Duty it’s likely you’ll be towing a trailer and the 2017 model’s high-mounted stop lamp camera that gives you a total view of the bed and helps you hook up a fifth wheel trailer. The truck features 360-degree camera system that draws from four high-def cameras, which help with trailer hookup and maneuvering. You can even add a camera to the trailer for an even better view.
