While the stock shifters atop the MT-82 manual transmission in the Mustang have improved over the years, they still lack the precision and brevity that most enthusiasts desire. As such, one of the most popular modifications for a new Mustang is a shifter. There are many aftermarket solutions to hasten your shifts and sharpen their precision. A new shifter from Hurst does this and adds a bit of retro flair to the thoroughly modern S550.

With its signature chrome stick and white shift ball, the Hurst Competition Plus Short Shifter for the 2015 Mustang (PN 3910205; $374) is definitely retro. However, its pull T-shaped pull-trigger release for the reverse lockout harkens to the park/reverse lockout mechanism on the company’s popular automatic shifters.
Of course, the shifter also offers shorter throws, and achieves those with a multi-link arrangement that is said to optimize the shifting motion.
“This new Hurst shifter utilizes a multi-link-type mechanism to achieve the perfect combination for a short-throw shifter, reducing shift throw by 38 percent from front to back, while maintaining a smooth side-to-side shift that is barely reduced, resulting in close to full side-to-side resolution,†says the company.
Available now, these billet-steel shifters fit all 2015 Mustangs with MT-82 manual transmissions. If you want to learn more about this unit, you can check out the thread on our forum.
