Worth the Wait

Ford Performance S550 calibrations to offer more bang for the buck

If you have been patiently waiting for a performance calibration from the factory’s performance parts division, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. However, we have learned that your patience just might pay off. Ford Performance Racing Parts has been hard at work on its performance calibrations for the latest Mustangs, including the GT and EcoBoost. And, we have learned that these cals might just offer more than their predecessors.

Ford Performance Racing Parts already has a companion calibration for manual-transmission 2015+ GTs with its supercharger kit—like this demo model—but naturally aspirated calibrations are on the way.

While these calibrations will still be locked to your Mustang’s VIN, we learned that the files sent to the California Air Resources Board for approval are built from the outset to include adjustments meant to maximize a broader range of FPRP bolt-on parts, including intakes, throttle bodies, and even numerically higher gear ratios.

There is also a more modern delivery mechanism for these forthcoming calibrations. It is called the ProCal 3, and was already implemented on FPRP’s supercharger kit (PN M-6066-M8627; $6,895) for manual-trans 2015 Mustang GTs. Unlike the old ProCal 2 handheld tuner, which required that you fill out a form and wait for the device to ship to you, the third-gen tuner is a USB-to-OBD-II dongle that allows you to download the appropriate calibration for your combo and flash the PCM.

Already deployed to provide calibrations for supercharged S550s, the next gig for the FPRP ProCal 3 will be to deliver performance calibrations for naturally aspirated and EcoBoost S550 Mustangs.

This do-it-yourself strategy saves you time and hassle, as your car won’t be down while you wait for a new calibration, and it should allow you to easily update with another FPRP calibration should the need arise.

We don’t have any specifics about the complementary parts or the availability of these calibrations just yet, but we do understand that the naturally aspirated Mustang GT cals should be first out of the gate, followed by those for the EcoBoost Mustang. From there we wouldn’t be surprised to see something for the Shelby GT350 as well.

Expect to learn everything about these and other new offerings from Ford Performance Racing Parts during this year’s SEMA Show held in Las Vegas, Nevada, from November 3-6.

From the outset FPRP has provided calibrations via the ProCal 3 for 2015+ Mustangs with manual transmissions and its supercharger kit. An automatic-transmission calibration for this kit should hit the scene any minute now.

Moving forward Mustang owners will no longer have to fill out a form and wait for a tuner to arrive at their doorstep. Owners of 2015+ Mustangs will be able to download calibrations right from Ford Performance Racing Parts and flash these calibrations to their car’s PCM using the ProCal 3.
