With the demise—or at least hiatus—of Ford’s headlining power-adder Mustang, the Shelby GT500, you might have wondered if we had seen the last Shelby Super Snake for a while. Well, wonder no longer. Shelby American has just pulled the covers off of a next generation Super Snake and it’s based on the everyman’s 2015 Mustang GT—just like the 2015 Shelby GT we recently told you about.
Certainly today’s Mustang GT is no slouch, and by the time Shelby is finished upgrading it, the GT certainly qualifies as super. The company takes a new Mustang GT with either an automatic or manual transmission and adds a host of aesthetic and performance mods to create the new Super Snake.
“When Shelby American introduced the 605 horsepower Super Snake in 2007, the car became an instant sensation,†Joe Conway, CEO of Shelby American and co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International, said. “The new Super Snake is even better because the all new Ford Mustang is such a terrific platform for the iconic muscle car. By working closely with our partners at Ford Performance, Weld Racing, Michelin, Carbon by Design and Whipple and Kenne Bell superchargers, the 2015 Shelby Super Snake is an amazing car with world-class performance.â€
Yes, the new Super Snake is definitely supercharged. It comes standard with one of Ford Performance’s 2.3-liter TVS supercharger systems. It also wears a number of other Ford Performance upgrades, including an exhaust, heavy-duty halfshafts, 3.73 gears, a short-throw shifter, and a handling pack.
“Shelby American and the Ford team took the terrific Mustang to new extremes in the car’s performance capabilities,†Henry Ford III, Ford Performance marketing manager, said. “The close relationship between Ford Racing and Shelby demonstrates our ability to work together to deliver some of the most exciting Mustangs ever built. The Shelby Super Snake is another example of how we are developing the kind of cars that enthusiasts want.â€
And if the kind of car you want isn’t just a standard Super Snake, then there are plenty of options to make yours even more special. You can add a differential cooler, a transmission cooler, larger rear brakes, and adjustable rear control arms. Of course, if more is just right, you can boost your Super Snake to 750 horsepower with a Whipple or Kenne Bell supercharger.
“The latest evolution of the Shelby Super Snake is based on developing the most road-and track-capable Mustang we’ve ever built, from the suspension to the bodywork and choice in high performance superchargers,†Shelby American Vice President of Operations, Akos J. Feher, added. “We saw this as a great opportunity to create the type of car that appeals to both the traditional Shelby Super Snake owner, as well as to the driver who demands world-class handling with stellar braking and higher horsepower capabilities. It is a refined car with a premium, quality feel. After extensive testing and development on the racetrack and street, we feel that this is our best performing and sounding supercharged muscle car to date.â€
Shelby American is set to build 300 Super Snakes, which start a $49,995 on top of what your 2015 Mustang costs. If you want to custom build you own, you can head over to the company’s site and design your dream Snake. Browse the official brochure here to get a head start on your order.
