The Weight is Over

Ford launched its 2015 Mustang Build and Price site and the S550 weights have leaked, so there’s no need to hesitate

If you have been on the fence about ordering your new 2015 Mustang, it might be time to jump down and start clicking on the Build and Price section of Ford.com. Yes, in case you missed it, that site finally launched on Friday June 13, 2014, which made for a lucky Friday the 13th for those that wanted a user friendly way to navigate through the ordering process.

Yes, you may recall that we recently posted a story to help early adopters wend their way through the order process. Certainly the Build and Price site will make the process more streamlined for most Mustang fans. However, our story does still offer some pertinent advice to those order cars. For example, the site shows convertibles, but don’t expect to get one soon…

These are the base prices of the 2015 Mustang models compared to the corresponding 2014 models:

In another stroke of uncanny timing, the purported weights of the S550 Mustang family leaked—as most things do—onto the Internet courtesy of an alleged Ford dealer manual. The numbers provided a great deal of relief to those who were driven to near panic by the recent viral rumors that the 2015 Mustangs would gain anywhere from 100-300 pounds.

Here are the weight specs that leaked last week with the gain over the official 2014 specs noted parenthetically:

The new Mustang isn’t lighter, but at most it weighs about 90 pounds more—in the case of a manual Mustang GT convertible—than the same model of the outgoing 2014 model year. As we recently pointed out, it’s no huge surprise that the Mustang gained a little weight with the addition of an Independent Rear Suspension. However, it must be said, that if these leaked weights are accurate, that Ford engineers definitely did all they could to keep the weight off.

We still miss the days of the 5.0 LX, and the closest you can get to ordering one of those is starting with a base GT and not adding any options. That’s tough to do though, as some of the options are pretty sweet, especially the value-packed Performance Package. It will set you back another $2,495 on the GT. It’s only available on the manual GT, however.

So now we know what the car looks like, what it costs, and even how much it might weigh. All that’s left is to find out how much power it makes, and what it feels like to drive each variation. We already know what it’s like to ride in the Ecoboost Performance Pack ’Stang, and it was fun. We can only imagine that the GT will take that fun to another level.

If you have to know every last spec before you buy a new car, you might be waiting another month or two to find out the official horsepower ratings. Looking into our crystal ball, we’d say the V-6 power should remain status quo, while the Ecoboost will likely clock in at about 325 horsepower. As for the GT it should crank out around 460. After all, in Performance Pack form, it will have to handily outperform the lighter, solid-axle, 444hp Boss 302 as promised by Ford’s engineers.

Creating an intriguing quagmire for the open-minded performance enthusiast, a lightly optioned Ecoboost Premium and a lightly optioned base GT will be in the same price neighborhood. If you get the Ecoboost Premium, you can step up to the aforementioned 50 Years Appearance Package. You can add the tempting Performance Package to an Ecoboost Mustang for $1,995.

However, those are just guesses, so don’t hold us to them or spread them all over the ’Net as fact. We are just making educated prognostications to see how close our guesses might be to the real numbers when they are announced. However, we seriously doubt the official numbers will disappoint, as the Mustang Team has been on quite a roll in recent years.

So, if you like the new Mustang and you have the loot, you can click here and go spec out your dream S550. Even if you don’t plan on buying one today, it beats working. That’s more than a GT500 used to cost back in the early S197 era.

  1. Those newer quoted weights are down a little. Remember those are base (no options) weights for each model quoted. So once you add in all the goodies on a GT v8 you are still looking (more than likely) 150-200 pound weight gain over out going platform. Still will not slow down interested buyers.

  3. prices didnt increase all that much….. most of us will pay invoice minus 1/2 the holdback anyways, or at a min x-plan…i think ill buy one late summer next year….

  5. I’ll wait for the 2016 facelifted cars. No way that car is going to sell. Park it in a parking lot full of Fusions all facing the same way and find it.
